Take Inspiration From Yahoo Answers

I saw a statistic at the SEOMoz seminars in London last year and it stated that 80% of search is long tail. It comes as no surprise to me that Yahoo have successfully capitalised on this with the creation of Yahoo Answers.

Yahoo answers is a great example of a website capturing long tail traffic. I don’t believe for one moment Yahoo just want to help people, the amount of top 3 listings Yahoo now hold for long tail search will be phenomenal, that’s a phenomenal amount of traffic which in turn, turns into advertising revenue.

Through Yahoo answers webmasters now have information on a plate when it comes to what joe public want to know.

Content is arguable king, however many webmasters can struggle with what to write about when they are advised to blog about their industry and business. This is where Yahoo Answers can step in.

Searching Yahoo Answers gives you a good idea about what people want to know.

To make the most of it go to uk.answers.yahoo.com/ (this is the UK version) and simply do a search for a given keyword in your industry, the results page should be a big list of all the questions people have asked with your keyword in it.

E.g.

I have searched randomly for the keyword ‘Driving Lessons’, If i had a driving instructor website i would write the following blogs:

‘How many driving lessons did you have’ – A blog post about the average amount of driving lessons inviting people to comment on their experience.

‘Car insurance for learner drivers’ or ‘Do learner drivers need car insurance’ – I would write a blog post about what insurance if any you should be expected to have or what you need to do insurance wise if you learn in your own car

‘how to get over the nerves of driving’ – A blog post about how different people get nervous and what they can do to try to stop the nerves.

There are just three ideas and there were over 9000 results. Read the title of the question and read the question itself, by stealing your ideas from yahoo answers not only are you getting ideas for content but you could also steal the traffic from Yahoo for that question.

Finally, subscribe to the search results, do a search for your different keywords, for every search, you can subscribe to the search results, set up a feed reader and you can be updated daily with content ideas relating to all the keywords in your industry.
