Personalised Search For All

Google in the last couple of weeks has introduced personalised search for all of its users. In the past personalised search has been a feature that only worked when a user was logged in.

Personalised search is a feature that ‘personalises’ the search results for each individual user. If you use a particular website all the time and then do a search for something it might sell then Google will feature that website in its search results further up the listings than it might naturally appear. If you are a webmaster and you will be on your website all the time. If you then search for your keywords then Google may personalise your results which could put your website higher up in the listings.

Now Google have released this feature to users that are not logged in. For some webmaster this can become confusing, maybe they don’t realise their searches are personalised when they are logged out and even more so they may not realise that the feature can be disabled.

For me personally i don’t want my search personalised. Not because of the work

i do, but more because when i search for something i don’t want the same websites being presented, the chances are if im looking for something i have already checked the regular websites i use all the time.

disabling personalised search couldn’t be easier.

Firstly, go to Google. ensure you are logged out of Google. Perform a search so you end up on the search results screen. In the top right hand corner you should have a link that says ‘web history’ Click on this link

Once you click on the link it takes you to a screen with the option to disable personalised search. Click on this link and you are done.

Remember, you will need to do this on each computer you use, if you have a desktop and a laptop you may have to do this on both.
